Bernice, “Bunny”, and daughter Sherry Silk at his side on June 12, 2012.
Originally a “Bronx boy”, Hy loved the peace and beauty of Montvale after he left
Brooklyn with Bunny and moved in with his daughter Sherry and granddaughter Merissa
almost eight years ago. Hy served in Europe in the infantry of the U.S. army in WWII
and was awarded many medals, including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was
awarded the Bronze Star after volunteering to carry ammunition, food, water and
supplies to front line troops who were cut off by enemy infiltration and to carry back the
wounded. With great courage and love for his fellow soldiers, Hy made his way through
mine fields and enemy infested territory under intense fire throughout the night, giving
battle when attacked, and accomplishing his mission. Hy was wounded in France,
airlifted to a hospital in England, and returned to battle after recovering from surgery to
his leg. Hy will be most remembered for his unfailing devotion to his family, deep love
and compassion for all, gentle spirit, humility, and giving heart. His life was devoted to
serving others and putting everyone’s needs before his own, even in his last dying days.
In addition to his wife of 66 years, Bunny, his daughter Sherry, and granddaughter
Merissa, Hy leaves behind grandson Alexander Silk, son Barry Cohen and daughter-in-law
Phyllis Cohen, and grandchildren Danielle and Jennifer Cohen, all of New York, and
twin sister Carol Abel of Texas. He leaves behind countless others who were touched
deeply by his sincere love, kindness, and selflessness. Hyʼs wish for those reading this
is that you and your loved ones would “be well, stay well, and keep well.”
