Eugene Friedberg, M.D. was born in 1932 in Norristown Pennsylvania and grew up in West Philadelphia. He attended Central High School, and earned a full Mayor’s Scholarship for academic excellence to the University of Pennsylvania, where he majored in psychology and graduated with honors. In later years, he established an academic scholarship in his family name at Penn to support other aspiring students from Central. Following Penn, he received a scholarship to the SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine, where he did award winning research in cardiology. Dr. Friedberg trained as a resident in psychiatry at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident. After completing his psychoanalytic training at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, he became a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst in private practice in Englewood, New Jersey, where he served the community as a consummate clinician for over 50 years. Dr. Friedberg was also a revered teacher at the Columbia residency training program in psychiatry, and mentored a generation of leading psychiatrists and psychoanalysts. A teaching award in his name for psychiatry residency education is given at Columbia. He was known by friends and family for his impeccable character, empathy and kindness, and gentle wisdom and deep faith.
Dr. Friedberg resided in Alpine, NJ and is survived by Marlyn, his beautiful and accomplished wife of 65 years, 3 devoted children Ahron, Alanna and Jared, his sister Irma Swartz, and 8 loving grandchildren.
A temple funeral service for Eugene will be held Monday, March 24, 2025 at 12:30 PM at Temple Sinai of Bergen County, 1 Engle St, Tenafly, NJ 07670. Following the temple funeral service will be a burial at 2:15 PM at Cedar Park and Beth El Cemeteries, 735 Forest Ave, Paramus, NJ 07652.
