Roger Funk, devoted husband, father, beloved "Apa," psychologist, and child of God, went to be in the presence of Jesus on August 10, 2024 at the age of 80. Those who knew Roger would describe him as full of love, wisdom, compassion, adventure, curiosity, and perseverance. He lived each day with purpose, and even while lying in his hospital bed, he declared, “To live for God is a real thrill.” He was inspirational to many, making them feel understood, and had a special way of getting to the bottom of a problem to help others get “unstuck.”
Roger spent his formative years in Hillsboro, Kansas where he met his high school sweetheart, best friend and love of his life, Joan. His early life was marked by boundless energy and a propensity for adventure, which sometimes led to mischief. In his youth, he experienced a profound lesson in forgiveness and empathy, formulating his faith in Jesus and shaping his lifelong commitment to Christ. He moved to Illinois to pursue his education, married Joan, and settled in Lake Zurich, IL, where he raised his two children, Robyn and Todd.
As a psychologist and counselor, Roger dedicated much of his life to helping others and serving the Lord. In his earlier years, he actively served in many youth ministries, and later was involved in the community at Willow Creek Community Church for 44 years. His faith was a cornerstone of his life and work. He graduated from Trinity College in Illinois and completed his Master of Divinity with an emphasis in counseling at Trinity Evangelical Divinity Seminary.
Roger’s career began as Dean at Trinity College and Seminary, where he served for 13 years. He then expanded his expertise in clinical psychology through further studies, earning his doctorate at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology. For nearly 50 years, he provided counseling at North Shore Center for Counseling and Therapy in Northbrook, IL, and continued his practice via telehealth until the day before his hospitalization in February of this year. His passion in his private practice was for helping pastors, Christian leaders and therapists. His contributions to the National Leadership Prayer Breakfast Fellowship and his recognition as Alumnus of the Year by Trinity International University are testaments to his dedication and impact.
Known for his adventurous spirit, Roger's life was filled with memorable experiences. He fought forest fires in Idaho to fund his college education, played college football, and enjoyed the thrills of roller coasters with his grandchildren into his 70s. He spent many summers leading and developing camping and canoeing programs at Williams Bay, Timber-lee and Honey Rock Camps. His passion for road trips led him to explore Western National Parks, Florida beaches and Disney Parks extensively, driving his Honda with 667,000 miles on countless journeys with his family. Roger’s zest for life was evident in his many travels, including a memorable Disney Cruise to celebrate his 50th wedding anniversary with Joan, his love and partner of 57 years. He was known to quote the phrase, “It’s about the journey, not the destination.” One of his joys was taking his family to Six Flags Great America, attending the theme park 82 times in one season. Roger loved going out to eat with Joan for "dates," where they would have long, meaningful conversations over their meals. He was a genius mechanically and could fix just about anything on his cars, appliances and in his house.
Despite his numerous health challenges throughout his life, Roger faced each day with a positive attitude and a deep sense of gratitude. His resilience and unwavering faith were sources of inspiration to those around him.
Roger is preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Linda Funk, his sister Ruth Ann Peters Thiesen, and brother Donald Nelson. He is survived by his wife Joan, his children Robyn (Jeff) and Todd (Sue), and his grandchildren, Brittany, Ryan, Daniel and Andrew who will remember him for his love, strength, and fun-loving spirit.
A visitation will be held for Roger’s life from 4:00-6:00pm on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 followed by a memorial service at 6:00pm at Lakeland Church in Gurnee, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lakeland Church in Gurnee, IL in Roger’s memory. A meal and time of sharing will follow the service.
Roger’s legacy of faith, love, and resilience will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.
