Richard is survived by his wife of 49yrs, 361½ days, Mary, his two sons Eric (Robert) and Tony (Melissa); two Grandsons, Mason and Colton; his siblings Joann Bertsch (Duane), Sue Skarloken (Neil), Jeff, and Dan. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Bessie (Ridgeway) Matzke and his brother Edward Matzke, Jr.
Richard was born on July 15th, 1943 in Lamoure, ND. Shortly after graduating from Mott High School in Mott, ND, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Richard greatly enjoyed and was very proud of his 29 years of service. Throughout his Naval career, he received numerous, prestigious awards and commendations. Richard retired from the Navy in 1993 with the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer (E9).
He embodied the true definition of an outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, hunting, and camping. He would spend countless hours in his garden growing his prized tomatoes and cucumbers. He was a pro in the kitchen, and his family kept their promise, having him cremated with his favorite wooden spoon.
A memorial service is scheduled for 10:00am on Wednesday, November 4, 2020, at Marsh Funeral Home, located at 305 N. Cemetery Road, Gurnee, Il. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Richard can be made to Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256, or American Heart Association, 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, Il 60674.
