On Saturday, December 21, an Angel stopped by Advocate Condell Medical Center, in Libertyville, IL and took George Lewis, age 71, of Waukegan, to his eternal home as he was surrounded by his family and friends.
He grew up in Danville, Kentucky, the only son of Tom and Mattie (Helm) Lewis. He accepted Christ at a young age and joined First Baptist Church in Danville. He attended Danville High School where he excelled in track and football. He attended West Kentucky Industrial College studying Masonry. He was drafted in the Army and fought in Vietnam. After being discharged he made Waukegan, IL his home. He met the love of his life, Gloria Glaspie and they were married August 1977 at Ebenezer Church where he served under the leadership of Rev. Roosevelt Tart. He was an active member under Pastor John McBride until his illness.
He joined the Army Reserve (Fort Sheridan, IL) and was part of the Veterinary Medical Command Unit in Desert Shield/Storm from 1990 to 1991. Retiring after 20 years’ service as a Master Sergeant.
George was a loyal member of the Brick/Stone Masonry Union Local #20 where he met his lifelong friend Chester/Ruby Reed. He retired after 25 years of service. He then worked for the United States Defense at Great Lakes, IL in Public Works as a Stone Mason retiring after 10 years of service. The discipline and patriotism he learned in sports, and Army never left him as his friends and family can attest.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Gloria of 42 years, sons, Damon, Ryan (April) and Kenny, grandson, Jordan Mason, cousins Jim & Joyce Epperson, Sister-in-laws, Gloria Massey and Ruth Glaspie, God daughters, Genice(David) Daniels, Shanda Hunter, Jackie(Byron) Thompson, loving nieces, nephews, Danville Family, cousins and special friends.
Preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Mattie Lewis, his Mother and Father In-Law, James and Mary Glaspie, aunts, uncles and dear family and friends.
