Edward R May

Dr. Edward R. May, 92, was born April 24th, 1930 in Waukegan, Illinois and born to eternal life on May 8th, 2022 in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin. The seventh of ten children born to Edward T. and Jane May, Edward graduated from Waukegan High School in 1948 and served four years in the Air Force as a medic. He graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1961 and had a general practice in Gurnee and Waukegan from 1962-’64. After completing residency, Edward practiced radiology at Condell Medical Center from 1967-’93, and served as Chief Radiologist from 1971-’93. He proudly served on the Warren High School Board of Education for over three decades. Additionally, “Doc May” volunteered his services for Warren athletics from 1962-2012, and could often be spotted on the sidelines of Blue Devils’ football and basketball games. In his later years, he and Caryl could be found in the basketball stands cheering the Blue Devils on.

Edward married Caryl Jean Koepke on June 25th, 1966 in Waukegan, Illinois and they raised four children together; Mary, David (Dawn), Marjorie, and Jennifer. In addition to their children, they adored their ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Uncle Ed and Aunt Caryl were loved by their 41 plus nieces and nephews, and their Grayslake home was the host of many parties. “Doc” and Caryl were longtime members of the Waukegan Rotary Club, and were proud of the more than forty Paul Harris Fellows that they were fortunate to sponsor.

He was preceded in death by his parents Edward T. and Jane May; his siblings Agnes, Mary, Patricia, Jean, George, Elizabeth, Theresa, John “Jack” and Richard; his beloved wife of fifty years Caryl and his son-in-law Scott (Mary).

He is survived by his children Mary, David (Dawn), Marjorie and Jennifer; his grandchildren Brandon (Kelly), Kayleigh, Aaron (Lauren), Riley, Zachary, Cameron, Casey, Ross, Joshua and Lucas, and great-grandchildren Gabriel, Oliver, Brighid, Reign, Crosby, Kane and Amelia.

Visitation will be held at Marsh Funeral Home in Gurnee, IL on Tuesday, May 17th from 4-8 PM. Funeral service will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Wadsworth, IL on Wednesday, May 18th at 10 AM. Burial will be at Ascension Cemetery immediately following.
