ROMAN, Paul-- Passed away peacefully at Freeport Hospital on October 10th at the age of 88. He is survived by his son Fred (Mary), daughters Maggi Roman and Ann Smith (Gary deceased 2008), 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Robert (1999) and fondly remembered by Laurie. Born near Kiev, Ukraine, Paul's German language skills enabled him to find work in Germany as an agricultural “Gastarbeiter†in 1938. As war was nearing its end Paul made a daring escape from the Eastern occupied area to the Western sector. He was married in Germany and immigrated to Canada in 1952. He fulfilled his life's ambition acquiring a farm north of Guelph where he enjoyed independent country living and his garden until his final year. A special thank you to Irene Simmons, John Svensson and Nelson Burkhart for their considerable support, care and compassion. Cremation and a private internment at Marymount Cemetery, Guelph will take place at a later date. The family will receive friends at Gilbert MacIntyre and Son Funeral Home, Dublin Chapel, 252 Dublin St. N., Guelph, on Wednesday, October 12th from 10:00 -11:00 am with a Memorial Service to follow in the chapel at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society (cards available at the funeral home 519-822-4731 or send condolences at www.gilbertmacintyreandson.com).
