Passed away peacefully in his 95th year on Friday, October 27, 2023, at Hospice Wellington with his family by his side. Beloved husband of 73 years of Elena Campana. Devoted father of Rino (Lynn) Campana. Proud Nonno of Marilena Campana. Mariano is survived by his sister Anna (Carlo) and is predeceased by ten siblings; Giana, Camillo (Francesca), Angiolina (Antonio), Antionetta (Donato), Francesca (Carminine), Nicolo (Colletta), Fiore (Maria), Emilia (Antonio), Gennaro (Bambina) and Domenico (Aida). Mariano will be sadly missed by his many nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends in Canada and abroad.
Born in Torricella Peligna, Italy, Mariano watched over and helped provide for his siblings from a young age. After he married Elena in 1950, Mariano worked as a miner in Belgium before immigrating to Canada. He and Elena settled in Wawa, Ontario where he built a house for themselves with his own hands between shifts at Algoma Ore Division. While in Wawa Mariano enjoyed hunting, and gardening of course. He and Elena made many friends in Wawa that lasted a lifetime. Mariano and Elena moved to Guelph, Ontario in 1968 where he worked for General Electric and Owens Corning (Fiberglas Canada). In 1991, Mariano retired and remained active through daily long brisk walks and working in his expansive vegetable garden. Mariano will always be remembered as an avid and proficient gardener, a thorough problem solver with great mechanical aptitude, a guardian and protector of his granddaughter Marilena, a loving counsellor to his family both near and far, and so much more. He was a generous husband, father, Nonno, and friend who always wanted to give more.
Special thanks to Dr. Della Torres and staff, all the staff at the Guelph General Hospital and especially to the nurses, doctors, occupational therapists and respiratory therapists on the fourth floor who had Mariano under their care. The family would also like to thank Hospice Wellington. Although his stay there was very brief, the care that he received and sympathy his family immediately felt were appreciated.
