It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our dearest sister and Aunt Ellen. She passed away peacefully at St. Joseph's Health Centre in Guelph ON, December 29th, 2022.
Loving and devoted sister of Moira and Madeleine Hughes of Guelph ON, sister of Marie Kirvan of Kitchener, ON and sister and brother-in-law Joanne and Maurice Smith of Inglewood, ON. Doting Aunt to Arthur (Denise) Smith of Guelph, ON, Shelagh Kirvan of Toronto, ON, Maurice (Filomena) Smith of Brampton, ON, Moira (Scott) Visovatti of Powell, OH, Mag (Fred) Stewart of Aurora, ON, Kate Kirvan (Scott Pliska) of Toronto, ON, Shauna (Michael) McDevitt of Grimsby, ON, and Colin (Jacquie) Kirvan of Kitchener, ON. Preceded in death by her brother-in-law Frederick Kirvan and parents Arthur John and Ellen Marie (Moore) Hughes.
Adoring Great Aunt to Sabrina and Myles Smith, Linda (Matthew) Wischer and their children Marc and Abygail, Matthew (Brittany Collins) Smith and their children Hunter and Holly, Brendan Visovatti, Cael, Kate and Cavan Stewart, Stella Marie and Kiera Pliska, James, William, and Matthew McDevitt and Connor, Katelyn, and Liam Kirvan.
Ellen Hughes graduated from York University with a Bachelor of Arts in English. She was a dedicated teacher to students in the Toronto Catholic District School Board for over 35 years. She strived to create a kind and supportive classroom for her students to learn and grow and tailored her approach to ensure every student had the knowledge and skills to be successful.
Ellen's faith was the center of her life. She was a member of the Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate Catholic Church community where she contributed a lifetime of volunteer work including dedicating 10 years to the RCIA program, supporting home bound parish members through the Eucharistic ministry, and helping with Parish archives amongst many other activities to support the broader Catholic community in Guelph.
Ellen enjoyed cooking for family and friends, gardening, and spending time at her cottage in Southampton ON. She had an artistic side and taught others to enjoy art. Ellen was a kind and gentle soul and will be remembered for her generosity often saying 'That is just fine dear. I would love that' for any requests made for help.
In the last few years, Ellen suffered from Alzheimer's Disease and learned to live in and cope with an increasingly unfamiliar world. Her journey brought her to St. Joseph Health Centre in Guelph where she continued to share her gentle spirit.
We would like to send a special thank you to all those who cared for Ellen at St. Joseph's Health Care Centre. Your exceptional care and kindness over the last year will always be remembered in the hearts of our family. We would also like to thank Monsignor Noon for his spiritual care of Ellen and her family. Your compassion and guidance are deeply appreciated.
Ellen's family will receive relatives & friends from 2-4pm and 7-9pm on Monday January 2nd at Gilbert MacIntyre and Son Funeral Home, 252 Dublin Street North in Guelph, ON. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate Catholic Church on Tuesday January 3rd at 1pm. Interment at Marymount Cemetery, A reception will follow at the funeral home.
