Dearest,
It's hard to write words for when a person passes. When there are so many good things to speak about. I loved my Grandma very much, and will keep that love for the remainder of my life.
My favorite memories with her included summer days at Silent Valley, filling a glass piggy bank, hearing her tell stories of Grandpa and her during their time in Ethiopia, chatting while sitting with her by the ponds of the Arboretum, how she would do her scoff & chuckle after my bad jokes.
I'll remember her love, warmth and guidance she showed me.
Her appetite for Lindt Chocolate Bars, the chocolate cakes she made for my birthdays, and will think of her everytime I see a loaf of multigrain bread from Bunsmaster.
Her time ending with what us brings grief, but what is grief if love persevering

Grandma, you were with the best. 

You were funny, charming, beautiful, gracious, well-spoken, attentive and thoughtful.  I always looked up to you—even from day one!  

I remember loving just to sit near you during visits, to hug you, to give you kisses and to chat with you.  I loved listening to your stories and getting inspired by your grace and enthusiasm.  

I loved chatting for hours around the kitchen table or in the living room, discussing everything from memories about your childhood to global events and literature.  

It was on your typewriter upstairs at Renfield that I first learned to type.  And who would have known how much that skill would become the basis for so much of our relationship over the many years that followed—with the countless letters and emails we would exchange?

Despite the distance and time that adulthood brought, I always felt close to you.  I loved getting messages and letters from you, often with beautiful descriptions of birds, nature or other events in your life, and being able to respond back about my own life and its many happenings.  

A love of words, discourse and conversation definitely united us.

And beyond our deep love of words, there were silences, too, that I remember.  Often after a long afternoon of rich discussion, there would come a moment of deep stillness.  I loved those moments too.  Happy.  Loving.  Complete.  Soulful.  Hard to describe.

Honestly, so much of what I feel is hard to describe, and I’ll never be able to fully put into words what your love has meant to me.  I do know that I’ll be spending the next while celebrating and remembering your extraordinary life—and crying lots of tears, too, as I make space for all of that love inside of me.  I love you.  And I know you will always be with me.  Thank you for everything from the bottom of my heart.

We were sorry to learn of your mother's passing.  
Elizabeth and my mother ( Ada Hertel) were very close friends, and after my mother passed, I then enjoyed keeping in touch  with your mother, when she lived at the Arboretum.
She was a lovely lady and she will be dearly missed.
Our deepest sympathy to you all, our thoughts and prayers will be with you.
