Deanna Grace Hughes (nee Jones) passed away peacefully at Guelph General Hospital on December 28, 2017 at the age of 80. Predeceased by her husband Jack Francis Hughes. Devoted mother to Blaine, Ann (Tim) Wilkinson, and predeceased by her son Dean. Cherished grandmother to Jessica Wilkinson. Predeceased by her parents, Grace and Forbes Jones of Fergus, ON. Predeceased by her brother Robert (late Georgina) Jones. Dearly missed by her loving sister Shirley (Jim) Alexander. Beloved sister-in-law to Terais Dowler, the late Bill (late Hazel) Green, and Shirley (late George) Morden. Remembered and loved by her many nieces and nephews. Greatly missed by her friends and neighbors.
Deanna was a graduate of St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Guelph in 1958 and the Western University School of Nursing Education in London in 1961. She initially worked and taught obstetrics as she adored babies. She then worked for many years alongside her husband in his family physician’s practice. Deanna was an active member of the Community of Christ Church. She volunteered with many organizations over her lifetime, including Women in Crisis, YMCA, and teaching interpersonal communications skills at Human Services Community. Deanna swam regularly in Masters and for fitness at the Victoria Road Recreation Centre. Her interests included crocheting prayer shawls, hooking rag rugs, decorating, restoring antiques, breeding and showing Afghan Hounds, painting, sketching, and in her younger years, horseback riding.
Friends and family are invited to the Gilbert MacIntyre and Son Funeral Home, Hart Chapel, 1099 Gordon Street in Guelph to celebrate Deanna’s life on Saturday, January 27 at 2:30pm. Cremation has taken place and, as per her wishes, interment of both her and her husband’s ashes will take place in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated toward the Community of Christ Church Prayer Shawl Ministry, Grand River Regional Cancer Centre, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the charity of your choice.
