Richard J. “Rick” “Duck” Polentz, 63, of Grove City, passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at Mount Carmel Grove City, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Puerto Montt, Chile on April 1, 1961, Rick was a proud graduate of Hartley High School, Class of 1979.
Rick went on to earn a degree in Marketing and Broadcasting from The Ohio State University, where he also developed a passion for radio, working at both WOSR and WDLR in Delaware, Ohio. Alongside his radio career, he became a beloved on-air personality, often joined by his sidekick, "Clyde the Duckk." Together, they brought humor, warmth, and entertainment to their listeners, leaving a lasting impression in the local broadcasting community. His love for broadcasting continued throughout his life, and he later became the cherished "Voice of the Eagles" for the Grove City Christian Volleyball team, announcing games, introducing players, and curating the perfect playlists for each match.
A lifelong learner and community-minded individual, Rick had many interests and pursuits. He was deeply involved in Scouting from an early age, participating in Boy Scouts throughout his childhood, college years, and into his thirties. Rick mentored younger Scouts, helping them achieve their merit badges, and also served as an Assistant Troop Leader for his daughters’ Girl Scout troops, fostering a love of service and leadership in the next generation.
Rick was also an aviation enthusiast. In his twenties, he earned both his FAA license for small aircraft and a Lighter Than Air “Hot Air Balloon” license, a testament to his adventurous spirit.
Rick worked alongside his father, John Jay Polentz Jr., to run Nova Print, a family business they established in 1975. His dedication to the business, and to serving his community, was a cornerstone of his life.
Rick was preceded in death by his father, John Jay Polentz Jr., and his beloved grandmother, Juanita Escalona.
He leaves behind his devoted wife of 35 years, Janet; daughters, Victoria Ayres (Joshua) and Alexandra Hadchiti (Jason); his mother, María “Angee” Polentz, and her husband Ed Gayhart; his extended family, and a wide circle of friends, including lifelong friends Doug Moody, John David Crowl, and Mark Spiro. Rick’s heart was also shared with his beloved cat, “Oreo Kitty,” who was a cherished companion in his later years.
Rick’s legacy of kindness, humor, and devotion to family and community will continue to inspire all who knew him. His presence will be greatly missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
