William Joseph Redman, age 91, died at William Beaumont Hospital in Troy on February 12, 2015. Born on December 6, 1923 in Detroit, he was the son of Victor and Lucille Redman and grew up on Detroit's east side where his family worshiped at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. More affectionately known as Bill to family and friends, he graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1941. In 1943, Bill entered into the Army and served our country during WWII through January 1946. It was during that time in 1943, when he went into the Army Special Training Program at Providence College, RI where he met Doreen Brothers at a dance hall. They married in June of 1946 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. Soon afterwards, he went on to graduate from the University of Detroit in 1948 with a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry. Bill was a Chemist and Chief Plant Engineer for the City of Detroit Water Department for 31years, until 1976, when he and Doreen moved to Okemos. It was there that he was employed by the Michigan Department of Health. Bill retired 12 years later at age 62 and moved to Lake Wales, Florida. While living in Florida, he was a member of the Rotary International Club and served as President of the Lake Wales Drug Awareness Council. In 2005, they moved back to Sterling Heights, Michigan to be with their family. Bill enjoyed horseshoes, pinochle, bridge, Sudoko puzzles, and horse racing. Every year he held a Kentucky Derby party. His grandchildren will remember the fun times they had in Florida swimming in Grandpa's pool. He was a big fan of the Detroit Tigers Baseball and Notre Dame Football. Bill and Doreen were former members of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Harper Woods, which is now closed. He was a prayerful, devout Catholic who loved and practiced his faith up to his final days. William is survived by his wife Doreen; their two children, Gregory (Judith) and Elizabeth Thomson (Bruce); four grandchildren, Lisa, Greg Jr., Brianna and Kathryn; and 12 great-grandchildren, Jason, Larry, Sammantha, Anna, Rylee, Wyatt, Sofia, Grace, Ethan, Natalie, Kylie and Quinn. He was predeceased by a great-grandson, Michael. The family will receive friends at a memorial gathering on Friday, February 20 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road in Grosse Pointe Woods with the Holy Rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. Gathering at St. Anastasia Catholic Church, 4571 John R Road, Troy from 9:00 a.m. Saturday until the memorial mass begins at 9:30 a.m. The family has suggested memorial contributions be made to National Kidney Foundation; Finance Department, 30 East 33rd St., New York, NY 10016.
