Robert George Nesom, age 86, born April 30, 1934, died peacefully at home with family present on April 8, 2021. Son of Emma Lucinda and Fredrick Nesom who predeceased him. Husband of Victoria Nesom, father of Carol Cummins, Dawn Deyonker, William Nesom, and Scott Nesom. Proud grandfather of 7 and great grandfather of 1. Bob passed from long-term effects of prostate cancer. He fought an incredibly determined and courageous battle with tremendous dignity for several years, aided and supported by the unwavering love and care of his wife, Victoria Nesom.
Bob was born in Detroit, MI and grew up alongside his older brother, the late William Nesom and enjoyed spending time with his extended family in Canada. After graduating high school in 1952, Bob enlisted in the United States Army where he served as an Army Medic during the Korean War, stationed in Germany.
Upon returning from the service, Bob married his High School Sweetheart Victoria in 1957. He attended Wayne State University and Illinois College of Optometry where he earned his Doctor of Optometry degree. Dr. Nesom practiced for over 40 years in private practice in Grosse Pointe Woods, MI.
Bob was an active member of the Michigan Optometric Association, the Lions Club, and the GP Senior Men’s Club. For many years, Dr. Nesom volunteered to provide free optometric care for the Special Olympics in Mt. Pleasant, MI, as well as free care every Wednesday at the Optometric Institute & Clinic of Detroit, MI.
Dr. Nesom lived a full and rewarding life doing the things he loved including traveling, playing tennis with Victoria, golfing, attending sporting events for his children or grandchildren, volunteering his medical services, and the odd projects around the home. Family was his pride and joy and he leaves a growing legacy.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Victoria Nesom (Yaquinta), his children William Nesom (Mary), Carol Cummins (Mike), Dawn DeYonker (Greg), and Scott Nesom (Meredith), grandchildren Alyssa Kelly (Patrick), Catherine Guzman (Mario), Jake DeYonker, Robert Nesom, Elaine Nesom, Joseph Nesom, and Anthony Nesom, and great granddaughter June Kelly.
A Memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church,467 Fairford, Grosse Pointe Woods, Saturday , April 24th, 12 noon. and his cremation arrangements are entrusted to A. H. Peters Funeral home of G.P.W. His ashes will be laid to rest at Great Lakes National Cemetery at a future date to be announced.
