Nicholis Poulos

Nicholis Poulos, Ph. D, of Warren, a former administrator for the Detroit Public Schools, died February 26, 2010 at his home. He was 86 years old. Dr. Poulos retired in 1986 after 37 years of service as teacher, department head, and federal program evaluator. While serving as faculty adviser to the Cody High School newspaper THE STAR in the 1950's the publication was the recipient of numerous national awards. He earned a Ph.D at the University of Michigan in 1965 after obtaining B.A. and M.A. degrees at Wayne State University in 1949-50. He had also attended Lawrence Institute of Technology, Rutgers University, and Illinois Institute of Technology for specialized instruction. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps. as air-bombardier instructor to Nationalist China cadets. Later he flew as bombardier/navigator on an A-26 attack bomber. A product of Detroit schools, Dr. Poulos participated in baseball and basketball programs at Pershing High School and was later an avid follower of Michigan college and professional athletic teams. World travel was another passion of his, having traveled extensively through Europe, Asia, and South America. He was a life member of Phi Delta Kappa, Beta Sigma Phi, and the University of Michigan Alumni Association. Surviving are his wife of 31 years, Joan; daughters Laurel Schurr (David) and Jill; sons Nicholis Jr., James, and Robert; and three grandchildren. Brother of Anthony (Mary). Predeceased by brother William (Elsie). Visitation Monday, March 1, 2010 from 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 32000 Schoenherr at Masonic, Warren. Trisagion Monday 5:30 p.m. Instate Tuesday, March 2, 2010 from 10:30 a.m. until time of funeral 11:00 a.m. at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 760 West Wattles, Troy, MI 48084.
