Michael James Brennan M.D. of Grosse Pointe Shores passed away at his home on September 22nd. Dr. Brennan was the beloved father of a family comprised of his dear wife Rita and eight children and their spouses: Brian and Catherine Molloy, John and Linda Brennan, David and Theresa Klaasen, Timothy and Renee Brennan, Peter and Patricia Sullivan, Howard and Mary Kaplan, Joseph and Margaret Brennan and Kevin and Ann O'Brien. Dr. Brennan's professional accomplishments are too numerous to mention. He was a graduate of the University of Detroit High School and College. He attended medical school at Loyola University in Chicago. Dr. Brennan volunteered and served in World War II as well as in the Korean conflict. He trained at Cook County and Henry Ford Hospitals. During the Korean conflict he served as base Hospital commander at Fort Monmouth, NJ. After the war he returned to Detroit and was the founding chairman of the Oncology and Hematology Services at Henry Ford Hospital, where he remained until his appointment as President of the Michigan Cancer Foundation, now known as the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center. Dr. Brennan was Professor Emeritus of Medicine at Wayne State University, lectured frequently at medical symposia, and is credited with numerous published articles and books. Contributions included the introduction and implementation of hospice and related concepts to health care as well as significant developments in Cancer treatment and research. Dr. Brennan's professional achievements are eclipsed only by his personal accomplishments as a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Apart from his immediate family he is survived by 25 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He is beloved by all and dearly missed. Visitation 11:30 am until time of Memorial Mass 12:00 at St. Paul on the Lake Catholic Church, 157 Lake Shore, Grosse Pointe Farms, Saturday September 25th.
