Maynard A. Leigh, 80, passed away peacefully Sunday, Aug. 2, 2015, at home. Maynard was born Jan. 13, 1935, raised in Lansing and graduated from Ferris State College with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. He met Karen, the love of his life, prior to graduation. They married in 1961 and spent the next 54 years together. Maynard earned two master's degrees from Michigan State University. He taught school for nearly 40 years, most of which were at Grosse Pointe South High School. He was involved in the DECA marketing program. He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran. He also served as an usher for more than 45 years at Grosse Pointe United Methodist Church. He was an advocate of donating blood and donated 18 gallons in his lifetime. Maynard loved nature and the outdoors, fishing and wildlife, and his cottage at Healey Lake, Canada. He enjoyed many years of happiness and times had at his lake cottage, which he shared with family and friends. His family said Maynard's generosity was felt by many and he was grateful for the blessings in his life. He often said "People need a minimal of five hugs a day." Maynard loved his family and leaves behind his wife, Karen; sons, Michael (Elaine) and Todd, beloved grandchildren, Matthew, Justin, Morgan, Bradford, Parker, Evan, Trey and Cameron and many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Jami (Bill). A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday Aug. 8, at Grosse Pointe United Methodist Church, 211 Moross, Grosse Pointe Farms.
