Mason Ferry passed away peacefully on Sept. 1, 2023. Mason was the son of Dexter and Marian Ferry, born August 16, 1939 in Detroit, MI. An alumnus of Grosse Pointe University School class of 1957 and Princeton University class of 1961, he was also a veteran of the United States Army. Mason had a long career at the National Bank of Detroit as a trust officer before pursuing philanthropic endeavors. His leadership led to the expansion of the Detroit Science Center (now Michigan Science Center), tripling the former exhibit space. Additionally, he was responsible for planning, design, and construction of the new History Center of the Grosse Pointe Historical Society. He also donated his time, talent, and treasure to Inland Seas Education Association, St. Patrick Senior Center, and numerous other organizations.
Among his interests were historic arms and artillery. He was a member of the 1st Michigan Light Artillery Regiment, also known as the Loomis’ Battery. He also had a passion for antique arms, art & architecture, sailing & nautical activities, history including Detroit and the surrounding areas, and mechanical systems including steam power and other mechanisms.
Mason is survived by his wife of 40 years Mary Kaye Ferry (nee Schrage), his sister Marian Williams (Gray), his sister Julia Hale, his children Joshua Ferry (Lisa), Charles Kukawka (Theresa), Elizabeth Schneider (Kurt), Cheryl Kaye, Sara Guetzkow, and Clifford Kaye, and his grandchildren Jay Gild (Joshua), Brady Kukawka, Molly Kukawka, Joseph Kukawka, Julia Kukawka, Lydia Kukawka, Harrison Kaye, Charlotte Kaye, Cecilia Kaye, Jack Schneider, Sophia Schneider, Taylor Haggarty, and Dylan Haggarty.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend calling hours Friday September 8, 4-8 PM at A. H. Peters Funeral Home at 20705 Mack Ave. Grosse Pointe Woods. A Memorial service will take place Saturday September 9, Noon at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 21620 Greater Mack Avenue, St. Clair Shores, MI. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations sent to St. Patrick Senior Center Inc. (58 Parsons St. Detroit MI 48201), Inland Seas Education Association (100 Dame St. #218, Suttons Bay MI 49682), or Hospice of Michigan.
