Hello-
I’m John’s older sister, Jeanne.  I guess I just wanted to finally write a thought or two about John (has been a rocky few years and I guess I finally feel ready).  John was the eighth and I was the seventh of eight kids. Not so unusual in those days, and especially not in our Fraser neighborhood. We grew up with the neighborhood (yeah, Catholic) families of 5, 6, 7 kids. OUR JOHN, though, OUR JOHN. He was the baby of the La  Liberte’ family, the last boy of six boys. Our mother cherished and doted on him. Us other siblings should have been jealous and resented him but that was impossible. John was born - and I shit you not - with the exact same personality, sense of humor, fierce love of life, love of family and friends (even the damaged and most fucked-up of us), kindness, boundless energy, intelligence and, let’s face it, comic timing and a GIFT for impersonations, no matter how inappropriate, as you all grew to know and love in him.                                  I read the condolence remarks and I am transported back to those parties at our house - John and I would remove all of the furniture and rugs on the main floor of the house so nothing would get ruined or puked on!  He was a committed and most loving uncle to all of his nieces and nephews, and any other young person lucky enough to cross his path. He cared and he listened to each young soul he loved and would turn himself inside out trying to help, to uplift, to guide. Anywho! I always felt extra ‘cool’ being John’s sister.  I felt unconditional love from him, like, the real shit. I could write a book about his antics, his acts of love and kindness, his stupid loud jokes in public that were so, so offensive but (God help me) so funny I just gave in and  belly-laughed! He knew I hated/loved that. It was a challenge between us - he usually won. I love you John, as you know. I miss you acutely in this life. I hope that you, Maddie, and Mom and Dad are hanging out together. I hope.

My deepest condolences to the LaLiberte family. Although I've not seen him since 3rd grade, he left an indelible mark ❣️ on me. He was funny and always be my crush. Truly he is missed by all those whom he touched.  Now go make everyone laugh in heaven! 

My condolences to the family.  John was one of the kindest funniest people I had the pleasure of knowing. He was the best uncle to my kids . So sad to hear the news of his passing. The world needs more people like John in it.  Rip John

I'm deeply saddened to hear of John's passing. Although I haven't seen him since high school, his name still comes up in conversation often. If not when reminiscing about a friend's childhood crush on him, then about his great sense of humor that he perfected as a young child during his days at Disney elementary. 
What a sad loss for everyone, at a time that humor is most needed in our world, but especially for those who were his closest friends and family. 
My heart aches for you. May you be comforted knowing how John touched so many lives with his gift of laughter and heart of kindness.

As others have said, I always thought I would see John and talk to him again, but I am so saddened that it will not come to be.  One of the funniest people I've ever met, and I've met many funny people (having worked with Dick Purtan.)  John and I were always in-sync creating comedy live and ad-libbed, so to speak, for our friends. We both did impersonations and once we got going the lines just kept coming as we set each other up with one funny line after another.  We never wanted to finish making people laugh. It made us both feel so good that others enjoyed our humor. Humor that was a combination of Monty Python and Saturday Night Live type material.  We have lost a beautiful soul, and those of us who knew John already know that.  One day we will laugh again my friend.  Rest in peace John Laliberte.

Oh!  Such a painful loss, just when we could use many,  many more people like John in our world.   Always making people smile and laugh, no matter what.   My deepest condolences to his whole family and to all of us who knew and loved this guy.  Our entire Ames family mourns the loss of our extra little brother.    Keep 'em laughing up there, John!
 

One of the funniest guys I've ever known. You couldn't be around John without laughing- he brought humor to every situation.  So many great memories.  I recall John being inspired by a song on the radio (John Mayall's Room To Move) while parked at 7-11. He spontaneously jumped on the hood of the car, danced a bit, then did a front flip to the ground with a perfect landing. I laughed so hard it hurt.  
Also, traveled around California in the mid '80s with John and Jack Delpy. Got invited to the party of a stranger and John and Jack decided to have a wrestling match in the living room.  We were kindly asked to leave after they knocked over every lamp, table, and tv set in the room during their battle.

Other great memories include attending John's pool parties, spinning records on his dad's vintage phonograph, and going on a couple of camping/canoe trips with a group of friends.

I lost touch with John in the '90s, but he made time to attend my dad's funeral after not seeing each other for a decade. Such a great guy... I'm very deeply saddened by this loss. Condolences to the family.


My uncle John was the sweetest, funniest person someone would have the pleasure of meeting. As a kid nothing would make me happier than knowing he would be visiting. We would joke around much of the time together. Every time he visited it was truly a joyous occasion. He was kind to everyone and put a smile across every face. He extended his kindness and laughter to all. My brother with special needs would also have a joyful time when he visited, I know he will miss him as well. I had been trying to make contact with my uncle John for quit some time, very sad to find out the lack of response is due to his passing. I am happy to say we only have happy memories together. He was a great uncle, who is someone to be looked up to and respected. I forever remember our good times and his funny, kind spirit.

I am his niece from his previous marriage, and I wanted to extend my deepest sympathy and condolences to his siblings and family. Uncle John was truly a wonderful man; he was warm, genuine, and kind to everyone he ever met. I never once heard him say anything mean or negative to or about anyone. I’ll never forget walking the streets of Downtown Ann Arbor, begging him to impersonate the captain’s voice from the “Spongebob Squarepants” intro theme song, and when he happily obliged, I will never forget how his voice, clear and silver like wind chimes, reverberated throughout the streets, causing everyone to turn and smile, and it filled me with so much happiness knowing this was my Uncle, this man who could make everyone pause to turn and see who was making this hilarious, perfect impersonation from a kid’s show, just to make his nieces laugh until their sides stitched with pain. I’ll also never forget how Uncle John was truly supportive of my creative writing; he asked about what I was writing every single time we spoke, and he encouraged me to never stop writing. When I published my first poem in 2013 I smiled and thought, “Uncle John was right; I did it.” I wish everyone in the entire world could have met him. I wish everyone could have seen how he instantly electrified a room with his laughter and his remarkable ability to make anyone crack a smile; it was as though he didn’t rest until everyone was screeching with laughter. I wish everyone could have seen how the dog's passing in "I Am Legend" gutted Uncle John because he loved animals as much as he loved people. I wish everyone could have had an Uncle John, an effortlessly funny, supportive, caring, wonderful man. The world would be a better place if everyone had an Uncle John. 

Again, I am so sincerely sorry for your loss. He was so young, so colorful, so full of life, and I still can’t quite comprehend that he is gone. He will never be forgotten; may he rest in peace and may his memory live on forever. 

John was one of the funniest person that I ever met. Along with Tim and Mike Ames (who introduced John to me in high school) we shared some great times. One of the funniest times was when John and Zoran where engaged in a dueling Zamfir's childhood panflute scenario impersonation  at Big Boys! Never laughed so hard in my life. Always had a great time being around "Lib."

Sincerest sympathies to all of the family.  We were very close neighbors in the Fraser School System.  Our families shared many good times together.  God rest his soul & bring peace to all of his siblings.  With Love & Prayers, the Ames Family

I just wanted to pass my deep, heartfelt condolences to the Laliberte family. It has been a while since I saw Johnny, we have had lots of fun times, and laughs together during High School. Always had a good heart, always a guy who could brighten a room. I wish I would've known of this sooner.. I just brought his name up in conversation not long ago...hoping we could reunite for one more good laugh with you buddy.
