John Bommarito passed away on March 12, 2012 at St. John Hospital in Detroit. He was born on January 3, 1920; son of Michele and Maria (nee Cusumano) Bommarito. When John was about four years old his mother passed away from tuberculosis. His sister Ann and he moved to Terrasini, Sicily to be raised by his grandmother. When he turned fifteen he returned to Detroit to work selling produce with his father. Mr. Bommarito worked very hard for his father until he was drafted into the United States Army. He served in the Seventh Armored Division and sustained critical wounds as he abandoned his tank after it was disabled by a German ambush. He was eventually discharged in 1945 and received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals. After the war Mr. Bommarito continued to sell produce. He met Rosa Marie Mannino, the daughter of another vendor, and after a courtship, they were married on October 8, 1949. Together they raised their family in Detroit as members of St. Philip Neri Parish in Detroit. Mr. Bommarito began his own produce service and invested in commercial and residential properties in Detroit. The family lived in Detroit until 1971 when they move to Harper Woods. John was a wonderful family man. He took pride in maintaining his home and yard. He loved growing vegetables and flowers. He loved to cook and would always welcome family and friends to spend time in his backyard sitting poolside. He enjoyed 92 years of great health. He lived independently up until his death. John will be missed by family and friends left behind. He leaves behind his son Michael Bommarito (Nancy) and daughter Rosanne Brugnoni (Raffael). He was proud of his grandchildren Kristin, Bryan, Giancarlo, Daniel, Dominic, Matthew, and Monica. He is survived by his sister Ann Divine. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years Rose Marie, daughter Mary Ann Kelly, grandson John Bommarito, and brother Sam Bommarito. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2:00 until 9:00 pm at the A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave., at Vernier Rd., Grosse Pointe Woods. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm. Mr. Bommarito will lie instate on Thursday from 9:30 am until the time of the Mass of the Resurrection at 10:00 am at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 21620 Greater Mack, St. Clair Shores. Monsignor G. Michael Bugarin will officiate. John will be buried next to his beloved Rose Marie at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Detroit.
