

Harry Chandler passed away on October 3, 2012 after a fourteen month battle with Leukemia. He was born on June 22, 1918 in Detroit; son of Herbert and Ethel (nee Warwick) Chandler. Harry joined the ROTC at Michigan State University. After graduation he was enlisted into the United States Air Force. In World War II, he served 4 years as a Captain in the European Theater. When the Korean War broke out, Captain Chandler re-enlisted and was promoted to Major. He served for two years in Korea and was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant Colonel. Harry met the love of his life Lucille Blair in 1946 at the Detroit Yacht Club. The couple wed on October 11, 1948 at Christ Church Grosse Pointe. They were long time residents of St. Clair Shores. Mr. Chandler was a chemical engineer beginning his career at Parke Davis and retiring from Pfizer in 1980. After retiring, Harry and Lucille loved traveling together. They went on numerous cruises throughout the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. They visited many countries including all of the British Isles. Mr. Chandler was an active man. He enjoyed bowling and golfing. His woodworking skills enabled him to create numerous items including furniture still used by family members today. Mr. Chandler was a veteran sailor racing in many Mackinac races. His boats were named "Makai" and "Makai Lua". Makai is Hawaiian for "down to the sea". As he got older, his sailboat knowledge and woodworking skills enabled him to design and create model sailboats. He was driving his car until two weeks prior to his death. Harry leaves behind his beloved wife of 64 years, Lucille. He was proud of his daughter Penelope "Penny" Moore (David). He was a wonderful grandfather to Donovan Moore. He is survived by his sisters Anne Smith and Betty Lounsbery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 3:00 until 7:00 at Christ Church Grosse Pointe, 61 Grosse Pointe Blvd., Grosse Pointe Farms. A Memorial Service and inurnment will be held the following week at the Church.
