Gordon Renwick Maitland, Jr. passed away on June 8th at the age of 82. He was born on November 9, 1933 in Detroit, MI to Dr. Gordon Maitland, Sr. and Freida (nee Wishropp). Gordon attended Culver Summer Naval Academy for three years and graduated from Grosse Pointe High School in 1951. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Trinity College in Hartford, CN in 1955. Mr. Maitland served as Captain in the US Air Force from 1955-1957 as a Navigator/Bombardier in the strategic Air Command (SAC) 8th Air Force. His last assignment was in Goose Bay, Labrador where he flew the DEW line (Distant Early Warning) during the Cold War. Gordon married Betsy Chesbrough in December of 1957. They resided in Grosse Pointe their entire married life. The raised three children: Kathy Waugaman (Doug), Ted (Holly), and Gordie (Kathleen). He was the proud grandfather of Ian, Dylan, and Ryan Waugaman; Brooke, Allie, Mandy, J.R., and Henry Maitland. Mr. Maitland spent 35 years in commercial banking and securities trading, retiring in 1994 from First of Michigan Corp. He served over 57 years as an usher at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church where he took on the duties of a Deacon, Elder, and Trustee. Gordon also served on the Grosse Pointe Farms Emergency Support Unit for almost 50 years. He was Commodore of the Grosse Pointe Farms Boat Club and has served on the Parks and Recreation Committee for several years. Gordon enjoyed sailboat racing, fishing, bird hunting, reading, and travelling abroad. He was an avid University of Michigan Football fan and attended games for over 50 years. A memorial service will be held Friday June 17th 11am at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, 16 Lakeshore Dr., Grosse Pointe Farms, 48236. Memorial contribution may be made to donor's choice.
