Gerald Victor Holmes Sr. died on Sunday, February 25, 2018 with family by his side. Gerald was born on March 22, 1930 in McRoberts, Kentucky; the son of Grace (nee Olinger) and Thomas Holmes. Gerald served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and received the Korean Service Medal with 1 bronze star award. After his military service, he started working as a security officer for Chrysler. Years later, he transitioned into working on the line. Gerald was an avid fisherman and deer hunter. Many of the deer that he hunted was brought to various churches in the area and was used to feed the hungry and the poor. Gerald is a member of the Masonic Lodge 222 in Roseville, Michigan and a member of Waltham General Baptist Church in Warren, Michigan. From the 1970s until 2000, he served as deacon and singer for various churches in the area but the one stipulation all the churches put forth was that he had to quit smoking. And he did. Gerald is the beloved husband of Phyllis for 62 years. Loving father of Lee Holmes, Gerald Holmes Jr., George Holmes, Doug (Laurie) Holmes, and Kenneth Holmes. He is survived by many grandchildren, many more great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation will be on Thursday, March 1, 2018 from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road, Grosse Pointe Woods. A Masonic service will be held Thursday night at 6:30 pm under the auspices of Masonic Lodge 222. Funeral service will be held on Friday, March 2, 2018 at 10:00 am at the funeral home. Interment will be at Cadillac Memorial Gardens East Cemetery in Clinton Township. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society.
