Donald Niehaus was born December 27, 1932 on a farm in Litchfield, Illinois; the proud son of Herman and Lizzie Niehaus. Don entered into the kingdom of heaven on July 18, 2018, at the age of 85. Don attended Capitol University before transferring to Trinity Lutheran Seminary, where he achieved his Masters Degree of Divinity in 1960 and became an ordained Lutheran Minister. Not long after the completion of his schooling Don received the call to start a church in the growing city of Warren. Don, Marilyn, and Paul moved to Michigan, where Don helped to found Christ Lutheran Church. From the very first mission meetings held in the familys new house, to the building of the beautiful church that still stands off Schoenherr Road. Don truly helped the growing parish flourish. He also implemented many programs that Christ Lutheran continues to support even today, such as a place to hold support groups of all kinds and daycare for the parishioners and surrounding community. While he was pastor, he had the privilege to oversee many young seminarians and was the supervisor of many internships throughout his over 30 years as an active pastor. Serving his community was truly Dons calling in life and he did so at every opportunity he could. He served on the Board of Regents for Capital University, and on the American Lutheran Church Council. In the city of Warren alone, he served on the Warren Area Ministerial Association, a Chairperson for the Police Department, a Chaplin for the Fire Department, a Board member of the YMCA (as well as the Metropolitan Detroit YMCA), a member of Warren Consolidated Schools System Commission of Excellence, and a Board Member of the Warren Concert Band. In addition to Dons services to his church and his community he was also a family man. He doted on his wife and children and absolutely adored his grandchildren. As they grew, Don made sure his children knew the importance of family and putting in a hard days work, but he also made sure there were plenty of fun family adventures throughout the years. From boating to Mackinac Island, Cedar Point or even just around Lake Saint Clair, Don loved to be on the water soaking up the sun and the fresh air. Don is predeceased by his parents, and siblings Esther Buske and Kenneth Herman Niehaus. He is the beloved husband of Marilyn Niehaus (nee Schwartz); the dear father of Paul (Diane) Niehaus, Sue (Jerry) Herman, and Sally Baker; the treasured grandfather of Rebecca McMinn, John (Kim) Niehaus, Angela Herman, Samantha Herman, Jennifer (Kevin) Bogg, Zak Baker and Isaac Baker and great-grandfather of Dylan Bogg. He will also be deeply missed by his extended family and the loving community of Christ Lutheran Church. Visitation for Don will be Sunday July 22, 2018 from 2:00pm until 9:00pm at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 32000 Schoenherr Road, (at Masonic) Warren. He will lie in state Monday July 23, 2018 at 10:00am until the time of funeral service 11:00am at Christ Lutheran Church, 32300 Schoenherr, Warren. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Lutheran Church. Please share a memory on our guest book.
