David Thomas Damm

David T. Damm, 88, of Detroit, passed away on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. Born and raised in Detroit on December 5, 1935, David met the love of his life, Dorothy, when she moved in next door as a young girl. He was seven at the time, and the two spent their childhood growing up together. Though they were childhood friends, their love story didn’t blossom until New Year’s Eve 1954. Before that fateful evening, David was convinced he would follow in his uncle’s footsteps and remain a bachelor forever, focusing on cars and enjoying life. But all that changed when he reunited with Dorothy. They were married in 1960, and from that point on, they built a life of love, family, and memories that would last a lifetime.

David was a dedicated family man who adored his three children: the late Christopher, Edward, and Colleen. He cherished his role as a father, always making time to be present in their lives. David loved to cook, and he took great joy in preparing meals for family gatherings, particularly during holidays. He was the heart and soul of these events, ensuring every meal was as special as the time spent together.

After serving his country in the Army, David joined the Detroit Police Department, where he would serve as a patrol officer during his entire career. His passion for law enforcement was evident to everyone who worked with him. David was a mentor to many young officers and was known for his fairness, integrity, and compassion on the streets. He found joy in being a part of his community, and despite opportunities to advance in rank, he chose to stay where he felt most fulfilled — on the streets, serving and protecting. David’s colleagues, supervisors, and the community he served held him in high regard, and he never had a boss who didn’t admire his dedication.

He is predeceased in death by his adored son, Christopher Damm, and siblings, Rodney Damm, Fredrick Damm, and Barbara Mouton. David is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy, who stood by his side for almost 65 years. Together, they built a beautiful legacy of love, strength, and resilience. He is also survived by his adored children, Edward (Janet) Damm and Colleen (Joe) Sangster; loving grandchildren, Amanda Damm (Joshuwa Koppen), Bradley (Justine) Damm, and Danielle Damm; and cherished great-grandchildren, William, Magnolia, and Elysia; as well as his sister Phyllis Burcz and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.

David’s life was defined by love — for his family, his work, and the community he served. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, a caring father, a cherished friend, and a respected officer. His warmth, wisdom, and kindness touched the lives of many, and he will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to know him.

A visitation for David will be held on Wednesday, October 16,, 2024 from 2pm until 8pm with a Scripture Service at 7pm at A.H. Peters Funeral Home located at 20705 Mack Ave. Grosse Pointe Woods, MI. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 17th, at 10am with an instate period beginning at 9:30am at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 21620 Great Mack Ave. St. Clair Shores, MI 48080.
