Hanneman was a graduate of Grosse Pointe High School Class of 1959, where he played several sports, including football and track. He was the son of Charles Bennett Sr. and Mary (nee Dispennette) Hanneman, also graduates of Grosse Pointe High School, Class of 1932.
Hanneman played football briefly at Ferris State University and attended Wayne State University as an undergraduate and master’s degree candidate. He worked with Summer Institute of Linguistics/Wycliffe Bible Translators in Mexico and Nepal. Hanneman was also one of several ministers on staff at Bethesda Missionary Temple in Detroit, Michigan, where he also developed and taught Sunday School curriculum.
Hanneman also worked as a therapist for many years and developed and implemented a curriculum instrumental in assisting those with substance abuse issues.
Hanneman was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Judith (nee Poppen), and his brother David Hanneman.
Charles Hanneman is survived by his sister MarySue (Jon) Struthers, and sister-in-law Martha (nee May).
Hanneman is also survived by his four children – Ben (Carolyn) Hanneman, Deborah (Tom Lehman) Hanneman, and Stefan (Mary Distel) Hanneman, and Dan (Heather [nee Smith]), Hanneman – and their mother, Annita Fisher. Charles is also survived by stepchildren David Sweet and Gretchen (Colleen) Sweet-Budd.
Hanneman is survived by grandchildren Joy (Cole) Blackburn and Caleb (Shaymi Adetayo) Hanneman, Silas (Angela) Abdullah and Paul Abdullah, along with Daschel and Adler Hanneman. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A visitation for Charles will be held Monday, March 18, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236, followed by a memorial service at 12:00 PM.
