Micki Wallace, of Griffin, died peacefully Feb. 5, 2016, in the Coronary Care Unit of Saint Joseph’s hospital while awaiting heart bypass surgery. The former Marilyn Jane McComas was born August 27, 1934, in Indianapolis, Indiana, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Paul W. McComas and spent her early years in the rural community of Fishers where her father owned and operated grain elevators.
Micki graduated from Indianapolis’ Broad Ripple High School in 1952 and entered Indiana University’s Kelley Business School. At IU she joined Delta Gamma sorority and met her future husband, Howard Wallace, who she married on June 11, 1956, in St. John’s Episcopal Church, Bloomington, on the day of her graduation.
She and her husband settled in Griffin, his hometown, and proceeded to raise a family of four. Besides being a mother and wife she pursued a professional life as a bookkeeper.
She loved Griffin and Georgia and actively participated in the community’s social, civic and political life. She was on the advisory and management boards of many institutions including the Salvation Army, the Science Enrichment Center and the 1st Methodist Church. For many years she was the Democratic Party’s representive on the local election board.
She was a member of the Wisteria Garden Club and the Utility Club.
Micki loved all of God’s creatures and all loved her. She was the strength of many.
She loved to travel, to entertain and to play dominos.
In addition to her husband she is survived by three daughters, Col. Elizabeth W. Fleming of Kodiak, Alaska; Janice M. Wallace, Griffin; Dr. Ann Howard Wallace of Harrisonburg, Va. and one son, Stephen W. Wallace and his wife, Laura, of Griffin and their two children, Emily
Wallace and Stephen Williamson (Will) Wallace, Jr., Atlanta.
Surviving Indiana relatives are her sister, Janice M. Custer of Chesterton, Indiana; nieces, Gayle Dickerson, Marilyn Mitchell, Diane Hyatt and nephew, Jeffrey Custer.
Micki was born a Methodist and died a Methodist interrupted by over 50 years as a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church.
Her children were planning a 60th wedding anniversary celebration at Spalamar.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, February 8, 2016 at 2:00pm in the First United Methodist Church. Dr. Med Roach will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Monday from 12:30pm until the service hour at the church.
In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the Salvation Army or to Stepping Stones in memory of Mrs. Wallace.
