Jack Howard Moss of Williamson, Georgia, passed away peacefully at his home on May 20, 2015. He lived a long and fulfilling life. His love of church, family, and friends sustained him through the health battles he faced in recent months.
He was born in Gadsden, Alabama, on March 7, 1931, to Bert and Mary Anchors Marker Moss. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and an alumnus of the University of Alabama. He married his high school sweetheart, Sarah Ann Sherman, who preceded him in death after 43 years of marriage. As organist and choir director at Hampton United Methodist Church, his wife Sarah Ann encouraged him to join the choir where he developed his lifelong love of music.
He was lucky enough to find love again and married Barbara Ussery. They were married nine years until her death in 2004. They shared a love of travel and enjoyed many years of entertaining and spending time with friends.
He is survived by three children: Jackie and Danny Clark of Griffin, Susan Moss of Atlanta, and Andrew Moss of Hampton; grandchildren Cecilia DeAngelis of New York City and Valerie and Dan Gill of Griffin; two great-grandchildren Brittain Gill and Coleman Gill; brothers Jerry Moss (Linda) of Birmingham and Danny Moss (Jennifer) of Gadsden and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his dear friend and constant companion, Lola Shuford, to cherish his memory. His love for his family was unconditional, and he never hid how proud he was of their accomplishments. His most joyous moments were spent with family.
He retired after 35 years of dedicated service with the FAA where he was an air traffic control supervisor at the Atlanta ARTCC. His love of airplanes lasted throughout his life, and he held a private pilot’s license until late in life.
He was an avid fisherman, a hobby he shared with his father and brothers and a love he passed to his son Andrew.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Griffin and a faithful member of the Chancel Choir where he spent many happy times with his daughter, granddaughters and son-in-law who sang in the choir also. In his memory, his chair in the choir loft will be marked with his robe.
He treasured the meaningful friendships he made as a member of the Men’s Bible Class who will sit together as a group at the service.
To celebrate the life of Jack Moss, the Reverend Alan Benson will conduct a service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, at First United Methodist Church, Griffin, Georgia. His family will receive friends on Friday, May 22, between 5 and 8 p.m. at the home of his daughter, Jackie Clark.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in his memory to the Music Ministry, Griffin First United Methodist Church, 1401 Maple Drive, Griffin, GA 30224.
