Tom R. Smith

Tom was born on August 13, 1928 in Leakesville, Mississippi and was the son of Ottis and Ila Pearl (Murray) Smith. He graduated from Leakesville High School and enlisted in the United States Navy.

Tom served 29 years in the Navy, serving during the Korean and Vietnam wars. His final duty station was at Pensacola, Florida where he worked as the Commissary Store Manager. He retired in 1975 at the rank of Senior Chief.

On January 22, 1972, Tom married Frances Barkley in Las Vegas, NV and in 1976 they moved to Oregon where they resided in East County. Frances preceded him in death in 2005.

Tom enjoyed gardening and was known for his tomatoes, strawberries and roses.

Tom is survived by his children: Jerry Smith of Portland OR, Melisha Smith of San Diego CA, Tommie Smith Jr. of San Diego CA, Kenneth Smith of Fairfax CA, Cynthia Pierce of Santa Rosa CA, Michele Davidson of Vancouver WA and step-daughter Linda Bouthillette of Vancouver WA, along with 8 grandchildren.

A private service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Bateman Carroll Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
