Ruth Settle was born November 2, 1933 in Portland, OR to Helen & Herbert Gentry. She passed away March 6, 2015 from complications of cancer. Ruth was a lifelong resident of Portland. She attended Lents Grammar School and Franklin High School, graduating in 1951. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Wally, in 1993. Ruth was employed by Portland public schools for thirty five years where she served as a Payroll Specialist. She retired in 1989. In her youth, Ruth was an excellent swimmer. She specialized in backstroke and won several medals in local swim meets. She later took up roller skating and competed in many individual figure skating and pairs dancing competitions including one national championship in Denver, CO. Ruth and Wally loved the outdoors. They enjoyed countless fishing and hunting outings throughout the Northwest. Perhaps their most enjoyable times were their annual trips to Napili Bay, Maui, enjoying the warm weather and socializing with friends. After Wally passed away Ruth turned her attention to gardening. Her beautiful flowers and manicured yard was always the envy of her neighbors. Ruth had no children. She is survived by: her brother, Robert and his wife Sherry Gentry of Palm Desert, CA, her niece Karen Gentry of Friday Harbor, WA, her nephew Scott Gentry of Tokyo, Japan and their children, Ashley Mead of Seattle, Roscoe and Yasmin Gentry of Naperville, IL.
