“Dick” (as he was known to most) was born on February 17, 1938 in Superior, Nebraska and he was the son of Paul and Zelma (Thomas) Jansen. He moved to Oregon as a young child settling first in Portland. The family moved to McMinnville and Richard attended St. James Catholic School and graduated from Albany High School in 1956.
On February 5, 1957, Dick enlisted in the United States Air Force. He received an honorable discharge on June 16, 1958 at the rank of Airman Second Class.
On May 20, 1961, he married Judy Raab at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Portland. They were later divorced.
Dick lived in Portland, Welches and Gresham where he owned and operated numerous restaurants and bars to include: The Happy Hour, Tin Quill, Your Inn, Barleyman, Whistle Stop, Dairy Maid, Don Guido’s and the BBQ Shack. He also resided in Hawaii for a while where managed Uncle John’s Family Restaurants. After he retired from the restaurant business he worked for Pantry Pride Meat Company.
Dick was a social story teller and very quick witted. He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Portland.
He is survived by his children: Pamela Jansen of Carson City, NV, Paula Jansen of Portland, Greg Jansen of Cornelius and Renee’ Terramoccia of Hilton Head Island, SC, step-children: Christie Navarro of Portland and Rohn Navarro of Oregon City and his #1 Sister, Donna Swift of Gresham along with his 3 grandchildren: Taryn Jansen, Morgan Jansen and Isabella Terramoccia and step-grandchildren: Michael Navarro, Bambi (Navarro) Wheeler and Kyle Navarro. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Bill Jansen.
A funeral mass will be held on Friday, November 2, 2012 at 11:00 am at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church followed by a Celebration of Life at the Gresham Eagles from 1-4pm. To celebrate Dick’s love of Hawaii, aloha attire is welcome but not required. A Private interment will take place at Willamette National Cemetery. Contributions may be made in memory of Richard to Elder Place. Bateman Carroll Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
