Margie began a career as a professional jazz clarinetist early, going out on the road at the age of 17. She met the love of her life, Peter E. Hayias, a fellow musician, in October of 1943. They were married on April 28, 1946, and remained so until Pete's passing on September 27th, 1975. Together, they had two children.
Margie was an active member of the community. She was a volunteer with the Woodhaven Volunteer Ambulance Corp, a member of the Musicians Union #801, and a longtime member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Woodhaven, New York. Upon moving to Oregon, she attended St. Henry’s Church in Gresham. Margie was also a longtime woodwind teacher; she taught at St. Thomas the Apostle School, The Mary Louis Academy and had private students as well. In addition to her love of music, Margie also enjoyed watching baseball. She was a long time Brooklyn Dodgers and NY Mets fan, and upon moving to the Pacific Northwest, she became a Mariners fan. Margie will always be remembered for the impact she had on her students and others who were inspired by her talent and her way of navigating the world as a female musician playing a traditionally male instrument. She was a trailblazer in her field; loved and respected by many.
Margie was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her sister Nancy and brother Robert. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Neal (Joni) and Carol (Andrew), and three grandchildren, Michael, Amanda, and Andrew. She will be missed.
A Committal Service will be held at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York, on Friday, August 19th, 2016, at 11:00 am. All are welcome to attend.
