Born on January 02, 1915 in Glendive, Montana, the fifth and youngest child of Julia and Julius Stein, Fred grew up in Lakeside, Montana. He moved to Oregon in 1948, living in Salem, Portland and Sandy. His home for the last eleven years was Cascadia Village Retirement home. Fred died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 100 on November 15, 2015. He was preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife Elizabeth “Beth” Stein, and siblings Elsie Cottrell, Minnie Spencer, Ella Rowlan and John Stein.
Fred loved the outdoors and spent a great deal of time camping, hunting and fishing. He was an avid gardener that took pride in his flowers and vegetable gardens. Fred and Beth enjoyed square dancing and went several times a week for many years. They traveled to Hawaii, Alaska and Washington DC, and took many trips to California and Montana to visit family.
Fred was great with his hands and could fix just about anything. During his lifetime he owned service stations in Kalispell, MT and Salem, OR. He also worked as a salesman and HVAC repairman in Portland. After retiring he remained busy, doing maintenance for the local elementary school in Sandy.
Fred loved animals and always had a dog. He was fun to be around, the kind of guy who always had a story or joke to tell and a motorcycle or riding lawnmower for the grand-kids to ride. Fred was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his daughter Florine Jorgensen, her husband Kermit and his stepson David Rauch; grandchildren Cheryl, Gwen, Dennis and Brent; step-grandchildren Kelly, Korey and Kathy; great-grandchildren Jacqui, Ilissa, and Reanna; great-great-grandchildren Trevor and Lily; niece Karen and nephew Scott.
A celebration of Fred's life will be held in Loomis, California in December 2015.
