Frederick Henry “Fred” Butkins passed away on October 19, 2017, in Gresham, Oregon. He was born on March 30, 1937, in Portland, Oregon, to his parents: Frederick William and Anna (Baker) Butkins. He attended Central Catholic High school and graduated in 1955. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the Oregon National Guard, and he served from 1955 until his honorable discharge in 1964. During this time, Fred married the love of his life, Marcia Smith, on July 9, 1960. They were married until his passing.
Fred worked as a Sears Service repairman for nearly forty years. He was a handyman in every sense of the word, and he could often be found repairing appliances for friends and neighbors.
Fred’s faith was very important to him. Over the years, he attended St. Anthony’s Church, and most recently, St. Claire’s Church. He was also involved in his community, and he served as the Cub Scout Master for a couple of years.
Fred was described by his family as a humble man, very generous and giving, and exhibited integrity in all areas of his life. He a true family man and he was always supportive of his wife and children. He was also an avid fisherman.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, his brother James, and his grandson Jeffrey. He is survived by his loving wife, Marcia; his children, Marilyn, Philip, Bradley, and Douglas; his sister, Marianne; as well as 13 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.
A Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 26, from 6 pm to 7 pm at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, with a Recitation of the Rosary to follow at 7 pm. A Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, October 27, at 11 am at St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Gresham, followed by Interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery at 1:30 pm.
