She married Charles (Chuck) Savage in 1942. Chuck passed away on April 23, 1991. The ever thoughtful Eloise chose that same date 28 years to the day to join the love of her life on a higher plane.
Their 48 year marriage produced four children: son, Chuck Savage married to Carlee, and three daughters, Monica Grinnell, married to Alan, Anamaria Hefeneider, married to Steve, and Dena Kay Smith.
She was “Gammy” to 15 grandchildren:
Eever, Chloe, Ian, Jordan, Molly, Connor, Tage, Samantha, Max, Monica, Sunny, Kelly, Casey, Dillon, and Tina B.
And 10 great grandchildren:
Sloan, Emery, Orion, Owen, Olivia, Jack, Hans, Will, Miles and Suzanna.
Always a “fashion yes”, as a young woman, Eloise was active in Portland Civic Theatre. Sporting green fingernail polish, her signature Lucite light-up pumps, and hats and turbans designed by a bevy of suitors, she was center stage both on stage and off.
Her artistic talent led to costume design, stage sets, singing, and eventually opening her own ballet studio, which she operated for over two decades. She could dream it up, create and produce it.
She will be remembered for her pizzazz and flair.
She also left a legacy of exceptional volunteer work.
As a member of the League of Women Voters, during the 1960 presidential race, she was approached to entertain The Kennedys in her Gresham home. Eloise, although a lifelong Republican, rolled out the Savage welcome mat.
She loved music, dance, and performance. She was active in both the Symphony and Opera Auxiliaries.
But most dear to her volunteer work was her 65 year involvement with the Providence Child Center. The Providence Guild’s Christmas Bazaar was legendary for its hand crafted gifts made by the Guild volunteers, and especially for the luncheon of freshly roasted turkey sandwiches and homemade pies.
The ladies of the Guild retired in 2018 after an incredible run of 60 years plus plus plus.
Eloise died peacefully in her home as she would have wished, surrounded by love.
“Happy almost 98th Birthday” Eloise, Gammy and Mom.
