Anna Scafidi, 78 of Gresham, passed away Monday, November 15, 2010 after a long illness. She was born on January 22, 1932 in La Grande, Oregon to Bernal and Carmi Hug. She grew up in Elgin, Oregon and graduated from Elgin High School. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Eastern Oregon University and later, her Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Oregon in Eugene. She was married to the late James D. Carlson, they had two children Dee Ann and Duane. She came to Portland in 1956 and was a school teacher in the Parkrose School District for 20 years. In 1976, she married Joseph Scafidi and they moved to Gresham in 1978. She was a member of AAUW and was a volunteer for the National Spinal Cord Injury Association – Oregon Trail Chapter and for VIEWS (Volunteers Involved for Emotional Wellbeing of Seniors). She was active with Snowcap, enjoyed sewing and hiking and Tai Chi at the Gresham Senior Center.
She is survived by her husband Joseph Scafidi of Gresham OR; daughter Dee Ann Branchini of Damascus OR; son Duane Carlson of Hailey ID and stepson Richard Scafidi of Portland OR; sister Caryl Dawes of Portland OR and brothers Bernal Hug Jr. of Elgin OR, Edwin Hug of Gresham OR and Elwyn Hug of Lake Tahoe CA.
Private Services will be held in Eastern Oregon. Contributions may be made to Snowcap Community Charities www.snowcap.org. Arrangements entrusted to Bateman Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham, Oregon.
