One of five children, Alice was born July 21, 1924, on a farm in Redwood County, North of Revere, Minn., to Rose Martha Miller and Claude Evan Underwood
Alice followed her sister Dorothy to Portland in 1944 where she worked for several employers, including Templeton Lumber Company, Meier & Frank, Staff Jennings, and Singer Sewing Machines. She moved to Hollywood, Calif., in 1946 until returning once again to Portland.
Alice was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, and the Trails Club of Oregon. With the club, she climbed and hiked in the Cascade range, where she met her husband to be, David Gesell Wagstaff. Alice and David were married at First Presbyterian Church Dec. 15, 1962. They raised two sons, Brian David Wagstaff and Bruce Evan Wagstaff. Alice enjoyed the outdoors, farming a large vegetable garden, organizing church groups, reading, and spending time with her beloved family. David and Alice remained active with the Tenth Mountain Division N.W. Chapter, Wyeast Club of Oregon and the Trails Club of Oregon where they were both dedicated Life members.
Mt. Scott Park Presbyterian was her church home for more than 50 years.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband, David; parents, Claude and Rose; and brothers, Marvin, Delbert "Buck" and Leonard "Jim." She is survived by her sister, Dorothy; sons, Brian and Bruce; grandchildren, Evan, Eric, Sara, and Rowan; and many nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly.
Alice's kindness, grace and beautiful smile will be missed by many.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 20, 2017, at Mt. Scott Park Presbyterian Church, 5512 S.E. 73rd Ave., Portland, OR, 503-771-7553.
