Velma Carden Armstrong, 98, of Hartford, AR passed away Wednesday, September 1, 2010 in Greenwood. She was a retired school teacher, having taught for 36 years. She taught for twelve years in the Hartford schools, and retired from teaching at Cavanaugh Elementary in Fort Smith. She was a member of the Arkansas Retired Teacher Association and member of the Hartford First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for years. She was an avid gardener tending her shrubs, trees and plants until after ninety-three years of age. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dan and Nora Carden, her siblings, and her husband, George Raymond Armstrong.
Funeral service will be 2 pm Saturday, September 4, 2010 at the Hartford First Baptist Church with burial at Hartford Memorial Park under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
She is survived by four nieces, Peggy Tanner of Collinsville, OK, Dana Lea Hunt of Hartford, Mabel Anderson of Beggs, OK and Sheryl Tipton of Dallas, TX; one nephew, Dale Giles of Greenwood; five great nieces, Caryl Morgan of Newkirk, OK, Suzanne Steinman of Denver, CO, Vanessa Hester of Owasso, OK, Katherine Chisholm of Bowie, TX and Julia Hearn of Mansfield and great-great nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Carl Hoopengarner, Dean Barnes, Sam Storey, Jimmy Pitchford, Jimmy Grigsby, Leon Burrows and Kirk Pennington.
