She was born in Greenwood, Arkansas on June 23, 1925 to Charles and Thursa Wilkerson. LaVerne was a faithful charter member of New Hope (Westwood) Baptist Church where she served for 47 years. She worked as a tax collector at Greenwood Courthouse for 30 years, Project Compassion Chairman of Activities for over 30 years, a charter member of Harris-Hannah VFW Post No. 6527, and a member of the Sebastian County Historical Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dannie McCorkle; one son, Charles McCorkle; three brothers, Perry Wilkerson, Troy Wilkerson and Billie Wilkerson and two sisters, Louise Solesbee and Berniece Dyer.
She is survived by one son, Terry McCorkle of Greenwood; five grandchildren, Suzanne (David) Neece of Greenwood, Christopher (Olivia) McCorkle of Ripley, TN, Elizabeth McCorkle of Greenwood, Cassandra (Bryan) Bridgewater of Mason, TN and Patrick (Sonya) McCokle of Mason, TN; ten great grandchildren, Braylon Neece, Ashton Neece, Sophie Neece, Declan McCorkle, Eden McCorkle, Oliver McCorkle, Brayden Bridgewater, Chloe Bridgewater, Keagan McCorkle and Shaylon McCorkle; one daughter in law, Patti McCorkle and one sister, Sue Dobbs.
LaVerne was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and servant to the Lord. Her faith and commitment to the Lord was an inspiration. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren. She handled any tough situation with grace and dignity. Her smile was infectious. She is dearly loved and will be missed more than words can express.
Viewing will be held Sunday, January 9 from 1 - 7 p.m. at McConnell Funeral Home in Greenwood, where the family will visit with friends from 5 - 7 p.m. Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Monday, January 10 at McConnell Funeral Home Chapel with interment at the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Pallbearers will be Terry McCorkle, Christopher McCorkle, Declan McCorkle, David Neece, Braylon Neece and Ashton Neece.
