Eternity in the arms of her savior will follow 92 years of life well lived for Laura Mae Decker Edwards who passed into eternal rest on Sunday April 26th at a Fort Smith hospital.
She was born June 26, 1923 to Edward Decker and Gertrude Flowerseed Decker in the Jenny Lind community where her ancestors were among original pioneers.
In 1946, Laura Mae Decker married her life-long neighbor, childhood friend and classmate Kenneth Edwards of Jenny Lind who died in 2003 after 57 years of happy marriage.
She is now survived by their only child, Kenneth Edwards, Jr. of Greenwood, his wife Sabrina Randall Edwards and their children Lindsey Allen and Drew Allen.
Mrs. Edwards is also survived by a sister-Mrs. Edna Robinson of Fort Smith, a sister in law-Sara Edwards Armistead and her husband Bobby Armistead of Greenwood, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Laura Mae Decker Edwards was a 1942 graduate of Greenwood High School. This year marks her fiftieth in the Greenwood Chapter #197, Order of the Eastern Star where she worked to organize a chapter of the Rainbow Girls.
A past member of the Greenwood Garden Club, Mrs. Edwards was a founding member of the Greenwood V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary. The Edwards’ were founding members of the Vache Grasse Country Club, life members of the South Sebastian County Historical Society and members of the Northside Church of Christ.
Mrs. Edwards spent a long career in bookkeeping, volunteered after retirement at the Old Jail Museum and served many years as a poll worker in local elections.
A memorial service will be held at the Northside Church of Christ in Greenwood on Sunday at 2:00 P.M. Interment will be at the Greenwood Memorial Cemetery on Bell Road in Greenwood. Local arrangements are under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
