Johnny W. “Sonny” Chambers, 73, of Hackett, Arkansas passed away Monday, May 2, 2011 in a Fort Smith hospital. John was born to George Wallace and Clara Lorene (Douglas) on October 25, 1937 in Arbuckle Island Community; he was the eldest of eight. John served his country in the capacity of aircraft refueler in Fort Hood, Texas from 1963 – 1965. In private life he was a mechanic by trade, he owned John Chambers Garage from 1975- 1990 and raised cattle on his farm. He enjoyed helping coach his grandchildren’s little league baseball team. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Clara Chambers; three brothers, Jack, Lonnie Ray and Bobby “Bud” Dean Chambers and one sister, Billie “Sissy” Jean Mackey.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Friday, May 6, 2011 at Mountain View Cemetery in Hackett under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood. The family will receive friends and relatives at the First Baptist Church reception hall in Hackett after the service. Viewing will be Thursday from 1 – 9 p.m. at the funeral home, where the family will visit with friends from 6 – 8 p.m.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Gloria (Boyd) Chambers; one daughter, Susan Chambers-Lee of Hackett; one son, James W. Chambers of Hackett; two grandchildren, Emily Molina and J.T. Molina of Hackett; three sisters, Betty Buckner of Charleston, Joyce Ann Lishbrook of Fort Smith and Sarah Quick of Van Buren and numerous nieces and nephews.
