Born in Greenwich on February 26, 1940, he was the son of William Wing and Josephine Glendon. He attended Saint Mary’s Catholic Schools in Greenwich through High School and then joined the U.S. Navy in 1958 at the age of 18. He was proud of his service to his country and would often relay memorable stories of his four years in the Navy, where he was stationed all over the pacific. After his discharge in 1962, he returned to Greenwich where he met and married Mary Margaret Moore in January of 1963.
Over the years he had various careers which all contributed to his abundance of mechanical and design skills. Before retirement he was the Maintenance Supervisor for the manufacturing facilities at Clairol/Bristol Myers in Stamford. Before, during and after his time at Clairol, he ran a side business and was known as an expert designer, fabricator, and installer of HVAC, heating, ventilating and cooling systems.
He was a lifetime member of the Byram Veterans Association where he held various leadership positions over the years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and Downtown AC in Greenwich. He was a longtime parishioner at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Byram.
He had many hobbies and interests. Since his early 20’s he owned numerous motorboats that he docked at Grass Island in Greenwich. He enjoyed fishing, lobstering and clamming on the Long Island Sound. He loved the Greenwich beaches, especially Island Beach where on most summer Sundays he brought his family and met up with a large group of friends and their families for cookouts. He enjoyed his vegetable garden where his bumper crop of tomatoes and hot peppers would often contribute to his homemade marinara sauce, consumed by many. Of all the team sports he liked, his passion was baseball where he taught his sons how to play and coached them on various town teams. They in turn carried on the baseball and softball tradition into the next generation of Wings.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Margaret and his five children, Maureen Wing and her partner Craig Morrell, Bill Wing and his wife Ginger, Chris Wing and his wife Michele, Brian Wing and his wife Jill, and Meghan Wing and her partner Earl Peterkin. He was the beloved Pop to his 12 grandchildren, Patrick, Brendan, Heather, Kevin, Ryan, Chloe, Colin, Caroline, Maddie, Courtney, Aidan and Liam.
