Susan was born in New York City on the island of Manhattan on September 2nd, 1936 to Gertrude McCormick Lynch and William J. Lynch. She was the middle child of five daughters and she loved each of her sisters dearly. Despite tragically losing her father at a young age, Susan would frequently tell stories of a very happy childhood in Red Bank, New Jersey highlighted by trips to Yankee Stadium with her grandfather. Susan graduated from Red Bank Catholic High School at age 16 in 1953 and was named class valedictorian (head cheerleader too I am sure she would want to make clear!). She then studied at Rosemont College where she received her bachelor’s degree and went on to teach middle school math.
During this time, she also appeared in a number of television and print ads. Susan was known for her great smile and brought life to any room she entered. She was always very happy and optimistic setting an amazing example for all who knew her.
After stints in Syracuse, NY; Waco, TX; Bronxville, NY and Palm Beach, FL, Susan and her family relocated to Greenwich, CT. She loved Greenwich and was in her 50th year living there when she passed. She put three kids through the public schools and it was there she found her calling in Real Estate. If you live in Greenwich, she has probably been in your home or sold it. Susan worked at Thomas Cooke, ran Dollar Dry Dock Realty and was elected as a Director of the Greenwich Board of Realtors while with Prudential Realty, her final destination before she retired.
Susan excelled at making and keeping friends. You didn’t have to be related to her to be part of her family. She thoroughly enjoyed traveling. From attending the America’s Cup in New Zealand to the Italian Open in Rome to climbing the Arc de Triomphe in Paris to exploring the country of her heritage Ireland, Susan loved having new experiences and meeting people.
If you knew Susan at all, you know that family was always her highest priority. She was at her happiest when she was with her family. Therefore, it was a true blessing that she was surrounded by family when she passed. Susan was predeceased by her first child Howard W. Kane III and his picture never left her
bed side once throughout her life after his passing. It gives those of us she left behind tremendous comfort to think about their reunion. It’s time to look after Little Howdy now Mom.
Susan is survived by her three other children and seven grandchildren, each of whom filled her life with endless joy. Carolyn Kane Goodwin, her husband Andy and their sons Greyson and Collin. Chris Kane, his wife Kate, their son Everett and daughter Alexandra. Courtney Kane Hayes, her sons CJ and Carter and her daughter Paige who all cared for “Mimi” tirelessly in her final years and have our eternal gratitude.
She is also survived by sisters Judith Tynan of West Palm Beach, FL; Lynda Goodwyn of Atlanta, GA and Nancé Minchin of Hobe Sound, FL. Her sister Barbara Travis of West Chester, PA predeceased her.
Susan made a lasting impression on those she knew and was a shining example of how to live a great life. She was loved dearly and will be missed greatly.
Services will be held at St. Michael’s on Friday, July 26th at 11:30 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Michael’s Parish which was a source of tremendous support and inspiration for Susan throughout her life.
