Born on October 15, 1920, to the late Charles and Catherine Smith she was the youngest of seven children including John Smith, Philip Smith, Dr. William Smith, Jennie Gallagher, Camille Godino, and Helen Irving, all deceased.
She attended St. Mary’s Grammar School and Greenwich High School. She married Oswald “Obie” Berlingo in 1939 who predeceased her in 1966. Sophie worked for 20 years at CBS Publications in Greenwich until retirement age of 65. She spent the next 20 years as a bus monitor for the Town of Greenwich caringly looking after her passengers, children with special needs. She finally retired at age 85. Her joys in life were gardening, cooking, visiting with friends, church and, above all, her family.
She is survived by her son William and his wife Sandra of White Plains and her daughter Adele Hatch and her husband Stephen of Cos Cob. Sophie was also the proud grandmother of Scott Hatch of Annapolis, Stacey Baxendale of Riverside, Michael Berlingo of Hoboken, Christopher Berlingo of Port Chester and Michelle Bombino of White Plains. She was the great-grandmother to Ellie and Kate Baxendale, Joseph Bombino-Munroe and Sophia Berlingo. She also leaves behind her best friend and neighbor Caroline Genise.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her name to GADC River House, 125 River Road Extension, Cos Cob, CT 06807. River House is where Sophie went almost every day over the last two years and enjoyed every minute of it. Their care and loving support was a very important part of her life.
