Sean Edward Murphy, aged 58, the cherished son of James and Patricia Murphy of Greenwich, CT, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes at his home in Redwood City, CA on Monday, November 18th. Born in Toledo, OH, Sean spent his early adult years in Greenwich.
He carved out a notable career as a fixed income sales executive, contributing his expertise to prestigious Wall Street firms including Merrill Lynch, UBS, Knight Capital, and most recently, Mesirow Finance. His academic journey was equally distinguished, beginning at Maumee Valley Country Day School in Toledo, and North Shore Country Day School in Winnetka, IL. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Rollins College, furthered his education at the American School in Paris, and completed an MBA at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
Mr. Murphy is survived by his parents, three sons, Ryan Murphy, a student at the University of Colorado Boulder, Brendan Murphy, a real estate finance analyst in Manhattan, New York City and Keane Murphy, a student at Syracuse University; sister, Courtney Murphy, also of Manhattan; brother, Jason Murphy and Irena Gjoni, Darien, CT; nephew, Connor Murphy, also of Manhattan, niece, Alexandra Murphy, Dallas, TX, uncle and aunt, Frank and Gerri Galus, Manchester, NH, and numerous cousins, friends and colleagues.
An avid athlete, Sean lettered in three sports during his high school years and maintained a lifelong passion for sports, particularly for the Chicago Cubs and Bears. His dedication extended beyond personal interests as he devotedly supported his three sons in their various activities, often coaching their teams. Sean cherished spending time with his sons, especially enjoying rounds of golf together during weekends. He was a low handicap golfer and a former member of Woodway Country Club, Darien, CT.
He was also an accomplished skier and tennis player who greatly enjoyed his weekly tennis tournaments in San Carlos, CA. His tennis community was a great joy to him. He deeply enjoyed the closeness he shared with all his family, especially celebrating holidays.
Known for his ability to connect and mediate, Sean was described as a bridge builder who dedicated himself to assisting others with their opportunities and challenges. At the time of his passing, he was planning to relocate back to Greenwich.
Sean's life was marked by his profound commitment to his family, his career, and his community. Sean always made people feel better about themselves. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Memorial services are being planned for Saturday, December 14th at the Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch St., Greenwich CT 06830, with visitation beginning at 1 p.m., and services at 2. Additional parking for Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home is across the street at the Board of Education parking lot.
Services will be followed by a reception celebrating Sean's life at the Bruce Museum, 1 Museum Drive, Greenwich. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Sean's name to North Shore Country Day School, 310 Green Bay Road, Winnetka, IL 60093
