Philbin S. Flanagan

Mr. Philbin Stephen Flanagan of Vero Beach, FL and Greenwich, CT died July 6, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Flanagan was born on February 7, 1928 in South Orange, NJ to William Kenneth and Maria Marzo Flanagan.

He was the grandson of Chevalier Eduardo Marzo of New York City, a composer and musician who was knighted by King Umberto of Italy. His ancestor, NY Supreme Court justice Eugene Ambrose Philbin, was instrumental in creating Central Park.

Mr. Flanagan received a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Brown University in 1950. Mr. Flanagan spent his college summers as waterfront director at Camp Kabeyun in Alton Bay, NH. He met his wife of 65 years, Marilou Mace Flanagan, while working at Kabeyun. He was an active board member of Camp Kabeyun and was instrumental in establishing the Porter Foundation to ensure Kabeyun as open space and as a camp for boys.

Mr. Flanagan began his 31 year career in radio and television as an advertising rep for the Henry I. Christal Company in NYC, which he bought in 1963. He then sold the company to Cox Broadcasting in 1973 and assumed the title of Vice President and General Manager of Television Program Enterprises, a division of Cox , producing such shows as Entertainment Tonight, Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous and Star Search. Mr. Flanagan was a member of the Stanwich Club in Greenwich for 53 years, serving as President from 1996 to 1998.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Flanagan is survived by his two brothers William and Bruce, daughter Kathleen Simpson, daughter Sarah Flanagan and her husband George Arguelles, son Peter Flanagan and his wife Peri. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren: Matthew and Jacob Simpson, Tyler and Riley Flanagan-Arguelles, and Paul, William and John Flanagan. He was predeceased by his sister and brother–in- law Patricia and James Kiernan, and by his son-in-law David Simpson.

His family will receive friends on Friday, July 10, 2015 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch Street., Greenwich, CT 06830.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Michaels Church, Greenwich, CT Saturday July 11, 2015 at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Porter Foundation, P.O.
