Edward Taber Simmons of Cos Cob, CT died on Sunday, March 9, 2014 at the age of 89. He had lived in the Town of Greenwich for more than 60 years. He was born and raised in Fall River, MA, where he graduated from BMC Durfee High School. After completing a post-graduate year at the Moses Brown School in Providence, RI, he attended Brown University, graduating with a Bachelors degree in Geology. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater (including Borneo, Okinawa, and the Philippines) on board LST 910 and achieved the rank of Quartermaster First Class. He had a long career as a hydrogeologist, working first for the U.S. Geological Survey and then for Leggette, Brashears, and Graham Consulting Ground Water Geologists. At the time of his retirement from LB&G in 1984, he had been company president for 5 years. He was a member of the United States LST Association, the National Water Well Association, and the Old Greenwich Yacht Club.
He traveled extensively and saw much of the world as a result of his military and professional careers. He was an avid sailor and loved studying history, researching the family genealogy, and caring for his houseplants. He brightened the lives of those who knew him by greeting each one with a smile, a joke, or a wink.
He was the son of the late Leonard Wilbur Simmons and Susan Sanford (Taber) Simmons. His brother, Charles Leonard Simmons, predeceased him. He is survived by his wife Claire Colby (McCreery) Simmons, to whom he was married for 63 years; their 3 children: Douglas Edward Simmons and his wife Debra of Clinton, MA; Diane Colby Wolchik and her husband Lawrence of Randolph, NJ; and Elizabeth (Lisa) Claire Hanna and her husband Mark of Lakeville, MN; 7 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 28th at 11 am at the First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich.
