Donald Russell Kiefer, 78, died suddenly on March 9th. Don is survived by his beloved wife of nearly forty years, Jane, cherished twin sons, Jared and Taylor, and daughter-in-law, Beth. He looked forward with great anticipation to the spring arrival of his first grandchild. Don is also survived by his two grand dogs, Bunker and Quinn, whose daily affections sustained him. He was predeceased by his parents, Margaret McFadyen Kiefer and Harold Birck Kiefer, and his brother, Warren David Kiefer.
Born on July 8, 1936 in Paterson, NJ, Don spent his youth in Andover, MA, Itasca, IL and West Hartford, CT. He received a BA in economics from Colgate in 1959 and earned an LLB from Columbia Law School in 1962.
Don loved and respected the law and had a 50 year career as an attorney, specializing in International petroleum mergers and acquisitions. He worked for Aminoil and Mobil Oil, before transitioning to the establishment of a private practice in Greenwich, CT for more than 30 years. A dedicated town servant with a strong sense of civic commitment, he served on myriad town boards and committees ranging from RTM District 12 member to the Planning and Zoning Board of Appeals, for which he was chairman from 2000-2012.
Don had a love of the outdoors enjoying sailing, fly fishing, hunting, golf, and skiing. He was a longstanding member of Riverside Yacht Club and, since retirement, a constant fixture at the Griffith E. Harris Golf Course. Don loved sport of all kinds, especially being a supporter of his sons’ athletic endeavors. He had a passion for reading and research.
A memorial worship service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, March 14th at the First Congregational Church of Old Greenwich. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Don’s honor to the Mianus Chapter of Trout Unlimited, or a charity of choice.
