Carol Grossman Cohn, 85, died peacefully of lymphoma on December 28 in Greenwich, Connecticut, where she lived and where her family had gathered to be with her. Adored wife of Richard Joseph Cohn for 63 years, loving mother of Jeffrey and Lisabeth, proud grandmother of Nicholas, Alexander, Matthew and William, and loyal sister of Joan and Bob. She was admired for her quick intellect, her elegance and beauty, her passion for the arts, ideas, books and travel, her taste and powers of judgment, and her exacting eye for English prose style. A graduate of Hunter College, Teachers College Columbia, and Sarah Lawrence College with Bachelors and Masters degrees in literature and teaching, she was a gifted and intellectually adventurous student, and later a teacher at university, secondary, and primary schools. A passion for film developed early, shared with her beloved sister Joan, was to be intense and long lasting. During a long and happy marriage to Richard, the president of Decorative Crafts, they spent much time traveling the world, especially in Florence and later in Hong Kong, where they made lasting friendships. She and Richard worked together in developing the family business, started in 1928 by Richard’s father the late Milton Cohn. In later years, they worked with their son Jeff and grandson Matt. An enthusiast for travel, theatre and ballet as well as film, Carol took great pleasure in their winter home in Stuart, Florida. She will be remembered by all her knew her for her exquisite style and charm, her lively conversation and her curiosity. Her friends and family will long miss her care, generosity and love.
