Carl N. Graf

Carl was born on October 14, 1926 in Montevideo, Uruguay. He was the second son of the late Dr. Alejandro Nogueira and Camille Graf. He moved from Uruguay to the United States in 1948 to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from which he graduated in 1951 with a BS in Chemical Engineering. In 1953, he received an MBA from the Harvard Business School. It was at MIT that he met his late wife Genevieve who was a researcher in the Biology Department. At MIT, he was selected to help design the first operational nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus.

Carl began his career in Cambridge, Massachusetts at a small international chemical company, Dewey and Almy, which was later acquired by W.R. Grace & Company. Carl and Genevieve enjoyed living overseas in Brazil, Italy, and Germany as he worked in various international divisions of the corporation. Eventually he began running W.R. Grace’s Chemical Division. In 1968, he and Genevieve moved from New York City to Greenwich with their three daughters, Elizabeth, Christine and Alexandra.

In 1987, Carl retired as the President and Chief Operating Officer of W.R. Grace but later returned to work as the Chief Executive Officer of Torraspapel, headquartered in Barcelona, Spain and also served on several corporate boards.

Carl was a talented linguist who spoke six languages fluently, served on the Board of Trustees of Greenwich Academy and enjoyed listening to Mozart, reading books on European history and horseback riding. He is survived by his brother Dr. Alejandro Nogueira and his daughters Elizabeth Graf, Christine Graf, Alexandra Graf Hazlett and grandchildren Alexander Gaynor, Christopher Gaynor, William Gaynor, R. Graham Hazlett, Kaitlin Hazlett and Alexander Hazlett.
